Design planning with distinction

MIN-Forum, University of Hamburg

The scope of services of M&P

  • BSE planning for the ‘MIN-Forum and Informatikum’ project as of work phase 3
  • Creation of a BIM model as the basis for all technical calculations

On behalf of the Authority for Science, Research and Equality, GMH is currently implementing the entire construction project ‘Modernisation and extension of the Eimsbüttel university location’ for the University of Hamburg (UHH) as part of an urban planning concept.

The project consists of two buildings above ground on a shared basement level. The gross floor area of both buildings is a total of about 42,000 m2. The spatial arrangement consists of central functions of the MIN faculty (canteen, library, lecture halls, seminar rooms and offices), the Informatics department and a central backup data centre for the UHH. The buildings are differentiated between in terms of building regulations and partly fulfil the special building states ‘multi-storey building’ and ‘place of assembly’. The desired openness across the different floors requires compensation in technical terms in order to guarantee fire protection requirements. Other special features with regard to technical equipment include direct connection to a private medium-voltage ring, gas or oxygen reduction solutions in selected rooms with an increased need for protection, the use of waste heat from the data centre and concrete core tempering. The BSE planning of work phases 1 and 2, as well as parts of work phase 3, was carried out by the Obermeyer planning office.

The design planning by M&P was completed in January 2019.

Entering work phase 3: as part of the design planning, M&P created a BIM model that is the basis for all technical calculations. This model allows and requires increased planning depth at an early stage. For example, breaches and clashes are detected and processed far earlier. This means that the level of information available in the design planning is significantly higher from the outset, which greatly reduces the risk of later rescheduling, i.e. recourse to the draft design. In the context of the design planning, this means that parts of the implementation planning have already been processed and the quantity surveying has been brought forward as part of the tendering phase. This method ensures high standards of quality and the overall planning process is accelerated.

An impressive model

The additional cost and effort from modelling with the BIM model is compensated for by the direct and transparent coordination of the trades. Errors are detected more quickly and duplicated work is avoided as far as possible through early cooperation.
