A day-care centre with a harbour view

M&P is helping with the planning of a showcase urban project in HafenCity Hamburg.

The scope of services of M&P

  • Planning of a mixed-use building ensemble with day-care, residential, commercial and cultural facilities (Digital Art Museum).
  • HOAI work phases 1 to 4 and 6 for all systems in cost group 400.
  • DGNB Platinum sustainability certificate thanks to high energy efficiency, use of renewable energies/recyclable building materials, optimised indoor climate, barrier-free access.

The urban life of tomorrow is taking shape: a future-ready mixed-use building ensemble with residential, cultural, day-care and commercial space – and a fantastic panoramic view of the Elbe – is being built in HafenCity Hamburg. The two towers and a ‘Work & Live’ building are being planned by M&P Hamburg.

Living in the city will be more attractive than ever in the future. Groundbreaking architecture that connects people privately and personally in a profitable way is currently being created around the world – such as in the new Elbbrücken district in Hamburg’s HafenCity. Around 15,000 mof residential, cultural, day-care and commercial space is being combined there, with the focus on digitisation and diversity.

What does the urban future look like? This!

Undulating facades, panoramic views over the district and the Elbe, green roof terraces, glass entrance halls – that is what the new building ensemble in HafenCity, which is located between the Elbe and Baakenhafen, will look like. Over the next 5 years, 600 apartments, 260 student apartments, a museum, a day-care centre and co-working spaces will be built there. Bars and other commercial spaces will provide plenty of variety. The core element of the construction project is the Digital Art Museum initiated by XING founder Lars Hinrichs. It also represents the guiding principle of the new district: with its different forms and methods of use and numerous digital elements, the building ensemble presents a successful vision of urban life in the future.

Contemporary architecture with the highest sustainability standards

The building ensemble offers the highest levels of user comfort, in a sustainable way. The entire project will be implemented in accordance with HafenCity’s Platinum certification for sustainable construction. Certification will be provided for high energy standards and the use of renewable energies (including photovoltaic systems on the roofs), the use of recyclable components, and barrier-free planning. High standards are also being set for the indoor climate, in particular low-pollutant, CO2-reduced construction, while another important point is the accessibility of the buildings.

The project’s innovative and sustainable mobility concept is also exemplary: a car-sharing model is mandatory for the car park, and a high proportion of the parking spaces also have charging infrastructure.

Progress in comfort: M&P is planning the living spaces of tomorrow

All the apartments feature underfloor heating. The heat is supplied by the local heating network of Enercity, a company that primarily supplies the eastern part of HafenCity with waste heat from Aurubis (the world’s leading supplier of non-ferrous metals). Whether the waste heat from the cooling systems in the Digital Art Museum can also be used for heating is being investigated as well.

The owner-occupied apartments are also cooled (temperature control) in summer via the same system as the underfloor heating.

M&P Hamburg has been awarded the planning contract for the tower of the building ensemble (dark blue, construction site 115) and for two ‘Work & Live’ buildings, construction site 116 (our project number ECE02) and construction site 113 (ECE01).

The tasks our experts have been entrusted with include the scope of HOAI work phases 1–4 and 6 for all systems in cost group 400.

The draft and approval planning have now been completed, with the building permit issued in a record time of six months. The start date for construction is dependent on the marketing that is now underway.
