Exhibition technology

M&P is modernising the Pomeranian State Museum
in Greifswald.

The scope of services of M&P

  • Planned renovation of the entire technical facilities of the gallery building in the course of the chapel construction project
  • Modernisation of ventilation systems, heat supply, climate control and energy measures
  • Heating and air conditioning control for new exhibition venue in vaulted cellar
  • New LED lighting concept with flexible, energy-efficient lighting rings
  • Creation of an optimal indoor climate in the exhibition rooms

An award-winning ensemble of buildings that combines medieval monastery foundations with modern architecture and houses the culture and history of Pomerania as well as a top-class collection of paintings: just in time to mark 250 years since the birth of Caspar David Friedrich, to whom the museum is dedicating three special exhibitions, M&P is also bringing the building technology up to exhibition standard as a specialist planner.

The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald was built on the foundations of a former Franciscan monastery. The complex comprises three historic buildings and the connecting new build: the museum hall. It is around 70 m long and approx. 10 m high and is the central location for lecture and event programmes.

New exhibition concept to mark anniversary of the birth of Caspar David Friedrich

In 2024, a special series of exhibitions awaits visitors: to mark the occasion of 250 years since the birth of Caspar David Friedrich, the Pomeranian State Museum is dedicating three special exhibitions to the life and work of the painter. In addition to encounters with original paintings, interactive stages will bring Friedrich’s life, work and era to life in an innovative way from March 2024. A new chapel, which is currently being built by Sunder-Plassmann Architekten with the active support of our experts, is also intended to demonstrate the modernity of the museum with multimedia presentations. Just in time to mark the anniversary of the birth of Caspar David Friedrich, the Pomeranian State Museum is getting a technological makeover, too. This is the art of engineering from M&P.

M&P plans the perfect museum climate

In the course of the construction project, the entire technical facilities of the gallery building will be renovated. Ventilation systems, heating, climate control, energy-efficiency measures – everything is being brought up to date by M&P.

The museum organisers also want to include unusual parts of the historic building ensemble in the future exhibition concept. M&P is making this possible: an old, vaulted cellar is to be equipped with heating and air conditioning so it can serve as an exhibition venue. Our team is also planning to remove an old underfloor heating system and install a new one half a metre higher in order to heat the vaults in an energy-efficient way. Another technical highlight is the new LED lighting concept: in order to make the object lighting more flexible and considerably more energy-efficient, the experts from M&P are planning lighting rings. The spotlights installed there can be moved as desired – and properly illuminate pictures in any location.

All these measures are details in intelligent engineering design that creates new, innovative infrastructures – just as customers have come to expect from M&P. So, business as usual for our experts? Far from it! ‘As a matter of principle, a museum is never a run-of-the-mill project. Because here – in contrast to residential or office buildings – people are a disruptive factor. We bring moisture into the rooms, and our exhalation can damage the paintings and exhibits. So we have to ensure the best possible climate in the rooms, even if hundreds of visitors are passing through. Our work, the entire energetic process, must be precisely tailored to the works of art. By the way, the climate also needs to be very precisely managed for musical instruments. A Stradivarius only sounds good at the right temperature and humidity,’ says Rolf-Peter Korff, Senior Consultant at M&P Hamburg GmbH. The experienced engineer and his M&P team have already provided the ideal climatic conditions in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie concert hall. In Greifswald, the M&P experts from Hamburg are working together with colleagues from Berlin (construction management) and Magdeburg (lighting) to make every future visit to the museum a real eye-opener for visitors. One thing is for sure: the paintings on display in the Pomeranian State Museum will retain their appeal for a long time to come thanks to the provision of the right humidity, temperature and lighting.
